and john boehner in a back room, and we just sit around. >> so much of the disillusionment you hear from members who feel they're going to make a difference is exactly what you're talking about. and so much of the infighting is really not so much between the parties, while there's plenty of that, there is such a frustration between house and senate. they openly knock each other in the hallways because they operate differently. and we have this whole sort of filibuster battle going on in the senate. the rules and how do things get through. and on the house side over and over again, there's this weary sense of they've passed some things. they may not be popular everywhere, but they did pass a budget. so what they're trying to do with this no budget, no pay is to sort of turn up the screws on the senate. and so republicans hoping to not get the blame for some of these fights are trying to focus a light on the senate not passing a budget which most people don't even realize has happened. >> i get your point, though. it's got to be frustrating to see the big debates get resolved in this backr

and working together. in fact, the fiscal cliff, john boehner did something bold. he violated the rule, he put a bill on the floor that could only pass with significant democratic support and we got a good deal of republican support. so i don't make predictions, but i try to do my job. and there's a lot of republicans hearing the same thing in their districts that i heard in mine. and that is, peter, why don't you all get together and get some things done? >> congressman peter welch, let's hope a lot of members of congress hear that instruction. have a good weekend. >> thank you. >>> you know, let's talk a little bit more about the republican conference meeting in virginia. charles krauthammer wrote a piece today calling it a new strategy for the gop. the general rule is from a single house of congress you can resist but you cannot impose. aren't you failing the country, say the insurgents? the answer, the country chose obama, he gets four years. want to save the republic? win the next election. liz, if charles krauthammer recommending the gop be less intransigent, do you think inside those me
: at the luncheon which followed a more bipartisan tone. speaker of the house john boehner presented the president with a gift and good wish. >> in the spirit of harmony i'm proud to present the flag that flew over this battalion of democracy today to president barack obama and vice president joe biden, and to you gentlemen i say, congratulations, and godspeed. >> reporter: the most poignant picture of the day was this the president going inside from the west front of the capitol, pausing and turning for one last look down the vast expanse of the national mall. another thing he thought he might not see, some daylight on the debt limit fight. republicans said monday they would vote tomorrow to raise the debt limit for three months that delays at least for a while another showdown on the debt which could result in closing down the government. and in just three weeks we get the second act of the president's inaugural address, his state of the union speech. there he will lay out more specifics and washington will be waiting to see if the confrontation continues. norah, charlie?
